PCS Weight Allowance: What JTR Table 5-37 Actually Lets You Ship

Airmen, including a woman in a flight suit, push cargo aboard a C-17 during a military move.

Your household-goods weight allowance is a hard cap. Unaccompanied baggage, the main shipment, and non-temporary storage all count against it. Here is the JTR Table 5-37 chart by grade, plus the pro-gear pounds that sit outside the cap.

Key Takeaways

  • JTR Table 5-37 sets a maximum household-goods weight by grade and dependent status. Pounds over the cap are yours to pay.
  • Unaccompanied baggage, the main HHG shipment, and non-temporary storage count against the same allowance. They are not three separate caps.
  • An E-5 with dependents is authorized 9,000 pounds in the table this site uses. An E-5 without dependents is authorized 7,000 pounds.
  • Member professional gear can add up to 2,000 pounds outside the cap. Spouse professional gear can add up to 500 pounds only if it is approved.
  • The table was unchanged in the 1 March 2026 JTR. Confirm your line with TMO before you book a partial PPM.

The Short Version

Your PCS weight allowance is one number. Unaccompanied baggage, the household-goods truck, and anything you put in non-temporary storage all draw from that same JTR Table 5-37 cap. Pounds past the cap are yours to pay.

An E-5 with dependents is 9,000 pounds in the table this site uses. An E-5 without dependents is 7,000 pounds. The chart was unchanged in the 1 March 2026 Joint Travel Regulations. TMO still confirms your line.

What counts against the cap

  • Household goods (HHG): the main shipment.
  • Unaccompanied baggage (UB): the air shipment that arrives first. It is part of the total, not extra weight.
  • Non-temporary storage (NTS): goods you store instead of shipping still count.

Professional gear is the exception. Member professional books, papers, and equipment (PBP&E) can add up to 2,000 pounds outside the cap. Spouse professional gear can add up to 500 pounds only if it is approved. Uniforms you are required to have are not a second household.

How families actually go overweight

  1. They ship UB “just in case,” then fill the truck as if UB never happened.
  2. They store a couch and also ship its replacement.
  3. They do a partial PPM without empty and loaded weight tickets, then cannot prove what the government should pay.

Declutter before the pre-move survey. If you are doing any of the move yourself, read the PPM guide and get the weight tickets TMO asks for. Damage after delivery is a separate clock: how HHG claims work.

Authority: Joint Travel Regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the military household goods weight allowance?
It is the maximum weight the government will ship for you on a PCS, set by JTR Table 5-37 according to pay grade and whether you have dependents. Weight over that line is an out-of-pocket overage.
How many pounds can an E-5 ship?
In the Table 5-37 figures this site uses, an E-5 without dependents is authorized 7,000 pounds and an E-5 with dependents is authorized 9,000 pounds. Confirm with TMO.
Does unaccompanied baggage get its own weight allowance?
No. Unaccompanied baggage, the main household-goods shipment, and non-temporary storage count against the same cap.
What is pro-gear, and does it count?
Professional books, papers, and equipment can be excluded up to 2,000 pounds for the member. A spouse may get up to 500 pounds excluded only when that pro-gear is approved. It is not a free pass for hobby gear.
Who pays if the truck is overweight?
You do. The carrier or a PPM payout stops at the authorized weight. Declutter before pickup day, not after the scale ticket prints.
