Active, Guard & Reserve: What's the Difference?

Which military component you serve in determines whether you get BAH, whether you move on PCS orders, which TRICARE plan covers your family, and how you qualify for a VA loan. This page breaks it down in plain English -- no jargon required.

The Three Components at a Glance

The U.S. military has three main components. Your benefits, housing allowances, and career path all depend on which one you are in.

🎖️

Active Duty

Commitment
Full-time, 24/7 obligation
Schedule
Full-time. You live and work on or near an installation.
Where You Live
Assigned to a duty station; moves every 2-4 years on average via PCS orders
BAH Eligibility
Always eligible when living off-post. Rate tied to duty station zip code.
PCS Moves
Regular PCS moves ordered by the military. Funded by the government.
TRICARE
TRICARE Prime -- no premiums, low copays. Enrolled through MTF or civilian network.
VA Loan Eligibility
90 continuous days on active duty qualifies. Entitlement is immediate.
Deployment Tempo
High tempo. Deployments of 6-12+ months are common depending on branch and MOS.
🦅

National Guard

Commitment
Part-time with state mission; can be federalized
Schedule
One weekend per month, two weeks per year (minimum). Full-time AGR billets also exist.
Where You Live
You keep your civilian home. Guard units are based in your home state.
BAH Eligibility
Only when activated for 30+ consecutive days (federal orders). Not paid on drill weekends.
PCS Moves
No PCS moves under standard Guard orders. AGR members do receive PCS orders.
TRICARE
TRICARE Reserve Select (premium-based) when not activated. Full TRICARE Prime when on active orders 30+ days.
VA Loan Eligibility
6 years of Guard service OR 90 days on federal active duty orders qualifies.
Deployment Tempo
Lower baseline tempo. Can be mobilized for federal missions and state emergencies.

Reserve

Commitment
Part-time federal component under service branch
Schedule
One weekend per month, two weeks per year (minimum). Full-time AGR billets also exist.
Where You Live
You keep your civilian home. Reserve units are spread across the country.
BAH Eligibility
Only when activated for 30+ consecutive days on federal orders. Not paid on drill weekends.
PCS Moves
No PCS moves under standard Reserve orders. AGR members do receive PCS orders.
TRICARE
TRICARE Reserve Select (premium-based) when not activated. Full TRICARE Prime when on active orders 30+ days.
VA Loan Eligibility
6 years of Selected Reserve service OR 90 days on active duty orders qualifies.
Deployment Tempo
Periodic mobilizations in support of active component requirements. Varies by unit.

How Your Component Affects Your Housing

Active Duty

  • Frequent PCS moves, typically every 2-4 years
  • BAH is paid continuously when living off-post
  • BAH rate is based on the duty station zip code, not where you grew up
  • On-post housing is an option at most installations
  • Buying a home is possible but requires planning around assignment cycles

National Guard

  • You stay in your hometown -- no PCS orders under standard Guard status
  • BAH is only paid when activated on federal orders for 30+ consecutive days
  • On drill weekends, you drive home the same night -- no housing allowance
  • More freedom to buy a home without worrying about an upcoming move
  • AGR (full-time Guard) members are the exception -- they receive BAH and PCS orders

Reserve

  • Same as Guard for housing: you stay in your civilian community
  • BAH kicks in only when activated on orders for 30+ consecutive days
  • No government-directed moves under standard Reserve status
  • Easier to put down roots because relocations are not mandatory
  • AGR members in the Reserve receive full active duty housing benefits

VA Loan Eligibility by Component

The VA loan is one of the most powerful home-buying tools available. Eligibility is tied to service, not rank or income.

Active Duty
90 continuous days on active duty
  • Wartime: 90 days activates eligibility
  • Peacetime: 181 days continuous service
  • No minimum service requirement if discharged due to service-connected disability
  • Entitlement is immediate upon meeting threshold
National Guard
6 years in Selected Reserve OR 90 days federal activation
  • 6 years of Guard service meets the standard threshold
  • Federal activation on Title 10 or Title 32 orders for 90+ days also qualifies
  • Discharge with service-connected disability waives the time requirement
  • State-only activations (Title 32 without federal pay) may not count -- verify with the VA
Reserve
6 years in Selected Reserve OR 90 days federal activation
  • 6 years of Selected Reserve service meets the standard threshold
  • Federal mobilization of 90+ days also qualifies even if under 6 years
  • Must have received an honorable discharge or still be serving
  • VA Certificate of Eligibility (COE) confirms your status

TRICARE by Component

Health coverage varies significantly depending on whether you are full-time, part-time, or activated. Here is what to expect.

Active Duty
TRICARE Prime
  • No monthly premiums for the service member
  • Low copays for most services
  • Enrolled through a Military Treatment Facility (MTF) or civilian network provider
  • Family members covered under Prime or TRICARE Select
  • Coverage is continuous while on active duty orders
National Guard
TRICARE Reserve Select (when not activated)
  • Premium-based plan available to members and families
  • Premiums are significantly lower than typical civilian insurance
  • Coverage is optional -- you must enroll and pay premiums
  • When activated on federal orders for 30+ days, you automatically switch to TRICARE Prime at no cost
  • Covers most medical, dental, and mental health services
Reserve
TRICARE Reserve Select (when not activated)
  • Same premium-based TRICARE Reserve Select as Guard members
  • Enrollment is voluntary -- you opt in and pay monthly premiums
  • Activation on 30+ day federal orders triggers a switch to full TRICARE Prime
  • Dental coverage available separately through TRICARE Dental Program
  • Retiring Reserve members who qualify may access TRICARE Retired Reserve

Drill Weekends and Annual Training

For Guard and Reserve members who are not in an AGR billet, the baseline commitment looks like this:

📅
Monthly Drills
One weekend per month, typically Saturday and Sunday. Some units run Friday evening through Sunday. You are paid at your rank for each day attended.
🏕️
Annual Training (AT)
Two consecutive weeks per year, usually in the summer. This counts as active duty for pay and benefits purposes. TRICARE Prime applies during AT.
💰
Pay During Drills
You are paid one day of base pay per drill period (typically four drill periods per weekend = four days of base pay). BAH and BAS are not paid during standard drill weekends.
Additional Training
Units can schedule additional training assemblies, schools, or mission-support periods beyond the minimum. These are often voluntary but can be mandatory.

AGR -- Active Guard Reserve: The Full-Time Option

AGR (Active Guard Reserve) positions are full-time billets within the National Guard or Reserve. Members in AGR status serve in a Title 10 or Title 32 full-time capacity to support their unit or command.

Same Benefits as Active Duty
AGR members receive BAH, BAS, full TRICARE Prime, and the same leave accrual as active component counterparts.
PCS Orders
AGR members receive PCS orders when reassigned. This means relocation entitlements, weight allowances, and government-funded moves -- just like active duty.
Retirement Credit
AGR service counts toward a 20-year active duty retirement, not a Reserve component retirement at age 60. This is a significant financial distinction.
VA Loan Access
AGR members meet active duty service requirements and can use their VA loan eligibility the same way active component members do.

Which Component Is Right for You?

There is no single right answer -- each component involves real trade-offs. Here is an honest comparison for someone weighing their options.

Active Duty is a good fit if...
  • You want a full-time military career with steady pay and benefits
  • You are comfortable relocating every few years
  • You want continuous TRICARE coverage without premiums
  • Full immersion in military culture and community is important to you
  • You want the fastest path to retirement with a pension
Guard is a good fit if...
  • You want to serve but also maintain a civilian career or business
  • Staying near family and your home community is a priority
  • You want a part-time commitment with periodic full-time opportunities
  • State-level missions like disaster response appeal to you
  • You want some military benefits without a full relocation lifestyle
Reserve is a good fit if...
  • You want part-time service under a specific branch of the military
  • You have a civilian career but value periodic active duty experience
  • Geographic flexibility matters -- Reserve units are nationwide
  • You want access to VA benefits over time without full-time commitment
