Military Pay and State Income Tax
Oklahoma provides strong income tax exemptions for active duty servicemembers, National Guard members, and military retirees.
Oklahoma exempts all active duty military pay from state income tax. This applies to servicemembers of all branches on active duty status.
Oklahoma fully exempts military retirement pay from state income tax. This is a significant benefit for retirees choosing to remain in Oklahoma after separation, particularly those in the Lawton, OKC, or Enid areas.
Oklahoma National Guard and reserve component pay is exempt from state income tax during drill, training, and federal activation periods.
VA disability compensation is exempt from OK state income tax consistent with federal law.
Even if your military pay is fully exempt, you may need to file an Oklahoma return if a spouse has OK-source income or if you have other taxable Oklahoma-source income. Consult the Oklahoma Tax Commission.
Note: Contact the Oklahoma Tax Commission (405-521-3160) with questions. Oklahoma's military income tax exemptions are among the strongest in the South Central region.
Property Tax Exemptions for Veterans
Oklahoma provides strong property tax relief for disabled veterans and their families.
Veterans rated 100% permanently and totally disabled by the VA receive a complete property tax exemption on their primary residence in Oklahoma. This is one of the strongest veteran property tax benefits in the region. Apply through your county assessor.
The surviving spouse of a 100% P&T veteran retains the full property tax exemption as long as they do not remarry and continue to occupy the home as their primary residence.
Oklahoma provides a $200 property tax exemption for all honorably discharged veterans regardless of disability rating. This is a modest baseline benefit applicable statewide.
Oklahoma's standard homestead exemption (approximately $1,000 off assessed value) applies to all Oklahoma homeowners, including military families who establish OK domicile.
Note: Apply for the 100% P&T exemption through your county assessor. Fort Sill families use the Comanche County Assessor; Tinker families use the Oklahoma County Assessor. Bring your VA award letter and DD-214.
Education Benefits in Oklahoma
Oklahoma offers state-level education benefits and strong institutional support for veteran students.
Active members of the Oklahoma National Guard receive a tuition waiver at all Oklahoma public colleges and universities. The waiver covers 100% of tuition for up to 18 credit hours per semester. Members must maintain satisfactory Guard membership and academic progress.
Active duty servicemembers stationed in Oklahoma, their spouses, and dependents are eligible for in-state tuition at all Oklahoma public universities immediately. No waiting period. OU, OSU, Cameron University (Fort Sill), Northwestern Oklahoma (Vance), and Western Oklahoma State (Altus) all commonly serve military families.
Multiple Oklahoma institutions participate in Yellow Ribbon, including University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University. Cameron University has a particularly strong military student program given its proximity to Fort Sill.
Oklahoma's OHLAP program provides college tuition assistance for income-eligible high school students. Military families who establish OK domicile may have eligible dependents qualify for this program.
Eligible dependents of veterans rated 100% P&T or who died in service may use Chapter 35 DEA benefits at any Oklahoma institution.
Note: Cameron University in Lawton is the institution most directly serving Fort Sill families. Each institution has a School Certifying Official (SCO) and veterans services office.

Oklahoma Veterans Hiring Preference
Oklahoma provides strong hiring preference for veterans in state and local government positions.
Oklahoma grants preference points to veterans applying for state government positions. Honorably discharged veterans receive 5 additional points on civil service examinations; disabled veterans receive 10 points.
Oklahoma law provides absolute hiring preference for 100% disabled veterans for certain state employment categories, meaning a qualifying disabled veteran who meets minimum qualifications must be hired over non-veteran applicants.
The surviving spouse of a veteran who died on active duty or from a service-connected disability may transfer the veteran's preference points to their own state employment applications.
The large DoD footprint in Oklahoma, including the OKC Air Logistics Complex at Tinker and Fort Sill, creates significant federal civilian employment opportunities where federal veterans preference applies in addition to state preference.
Note: Contact the Oklahoma Office of Management and Enterprise Services (OMES) for state employment preference information and the USAJobs.gov veterans preference guide for federal positions.
Military Spouse Employment and Licensing
Oklahoma has enacted laws to ease professional licensing transitions and support military spouse employment after a PCS move.
Oklahoma participates in expedited license endorsement for military spouses holding a valid professional license from another state.
Military spouses who leave employment to follow a servicemember on PCS orders are eligible for Oklahoma unemployment benefits.
The OKC metro has a significant defense contractor presence around Tinker AFB. Military spouses with security clearances or technical backgrounds often find contractor employment opportunities. The Lawton area around Fort Sill has a smaller but active contractor market.
Note: Contact the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission (405-525-1500) for unemployment claims. Contact the specific Oklahoma licensing board for your profession for reciprocity information.
