This includes base pay, special pays, flight pay, hazardous duty pay, bonuses, and allowances received while on federal active duty orders. Mississippi residents serving on active duty owe zero MS state income tax on their military compensation. This exemption applies whether the servicemember is stationed inside or outside Mississippi.
Mississippi fully exempts all military retired pay from state income tax with no age restriction and no income cap. This applies to retired pay from all branches including Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force, as well as Reserve and Guard retired pay. Mississippi's full military retirement exemption makes the Gulf Coast and central Mississippi highly attractive for retirees.
VA disability compensation is fully exempt from Mississippi state income tax, consistent with federal law. No special MS filing action is required. The exemption applies regardless of disability rating percentage.
Mississippi Guard and Reserve members who are not on federal active duty orders pay MS income tax on drill and annual training pay. Federal active duty pay under Title 10 mobilization orders is fully exempt. Once mobilization orders are issued, all pay from that date forward becomes exempt.

Pro Tip: File MS Form 80-105 if required. Visit dor.ms.gov for MS Department of Revenue military tax guidance. Mississippi allows servicemembers stationed outside MS to exclude MS-source income from their nonresident return in many cases. Keep your LES and current orders to document exemptions.

Mississippi provides full property tax exemption for 100% disabled veterans and a standard Homestead Exemption that benefits all military homeowners who occupy their home in Mississippi.
Veterans rated 100% permanently and totally (P&T) disabled by the VA receive a complete exemption from Mississippi property taxes on their primary residence. The exemption applies to the full assessed value of the home with no dollar cap. Apply through the county tax assessor's office with your VA award letter showing 100% P&T status, your DD-214, and proof of Mississippi residency.
The surviving spouse of a 100% P&T disabled veteran retains the full property tax exemption on the primary residence as long as they do not remarry and continue to occupy the home as their primary residence.
All Mississippi homeowners who occupy their home as their primary residence qualify for the MS Homestead Exemption. The standard homestead exemption provides a $300 annual credit off the property tax bill. Residents 65 and older or those who are totally disabled receive an additional exemption that can further reduce or eliminate the county portion of property taxes.
Mississippi provides additional homestead tax relief for veterans with service-connected disability ratings below 100%. Benefit amounts scale with disability rating and are applied on top of the standard homestead exemption. Contact your county tax assessor for current exemption amounts.

Mississippi has enacted professional license reciprocity and unemployment insurance protections to help military spouses maintain their careers after a PCS to Keesler AFB, Columbus AFB, or NAS Meridian.
Mississippi requires licensing boards to process professional license applications from military spouses who hold a valid license from another state within 30 days of a complete application. Covered professions include registered nursing, real estate, teaching, counseling, cosmetology, social work, and others. Boards must notify applicants promptly of any missing documentation rather than simply denying the application.
Mississippi licensing boards may issue temporary practice permits allowing military spouses to work in their licensed profession while the full reciprocity application is being processed. This prevents income interruption during the licensing transition period.
Military spouses who leave employment to follow their servicemember on PCS orders are eligible for Mississippi unemployment insurance benefits. A PCS is recognized as a qualifying reason for separation under MS law, and the spouse is not considered to have voluntarily quit without cause.
