Alabama exempts all active duty military pay and military retirement from state income tax, providing substantial financial relief for servicemembers and retirees.
Alabama exempts all active duty military pay from state income tax. This includes base pay, special pays, flight pay, hazardous duty pay, and allowances received while on federal active duty orders. Alabama residents serving on active duty owe zero Alabama state income tax on their military compensation. This exemption applies whether the servicemember is stationed inside or outside of Alabama.
Alabama fully exempts military retired pay from state income tax with no age restriction and no income cap. This applies to retired pay from all branches of the armed forces including Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force, as well as Reserve Component retired pay. Alabama's full military retirement exemption is one of the strongest in the Southeast and is a primary reason many retirees choose Alabama as their permanent home.
VA disability compensation is fully exempt from Alabama state income tax, consistent with federal law. No special AL filing action is required. This exemption applies regardless of the disability percentage rating.
Alabama National Guard and Reserve members who are not on federal active duty orders pay Alabama income tax on their drill pay and annual training pay. Federal active duty pay, including mobilization orders and Title 10 active duty, is fully exempt from AL income tax. If you receive mobilization orders, all pay from that point forward becomes exempt.
The Redstone Arsenal area is home to thousands of AL residents who are active duty military, DOD civilians, and defense contractors. Alabama's full exemption on military pay and retirement means servicemembers and retirees in the Huntsville area retain more of their income compared to states that partially or fully tax military compensation.
Pro Tip: File AL Form 40 or 40NR for part-year and nonresident returns. Visit revenue.alabama.gov for the AL Department of Revenue military information page. The AL DOR provides specific published guidance for military filers. Keep your LES and a copy of orders to document exemptions.

Alabama provides full property tax exemption for 100% disabled veterans and strong homestead protections for military homeowners.
Veterans rated 100% permanently and totally (P&T) disabled by the VA receive a complete exemption from Alabama ad valorem (property) taxes on their primary residence. The exemption applies to the full assessed value of the home with no dollar cap. To apply, bring your VA award letter showing 100% P&T status, your DD-214, and proof of Alabama residency to your county tax assessor's office.
The surviving spouse of a 100% P&T disabled veteran retains the full property tax exemption on the primary residence as long as they do not remarry and continue to occupy the home as their primary residence. Required documentation includes the veteran's death certificate and proof of P&T status at time of death.
Alabama homeowners who occupy their home as a primary residence qualify for the Class III Homestead exemption, which applies a 10% assessment rate rather than the 20% rate used for non-primary or investment property. Military families who own a home in Alabama and use it as their primary residence qualify. This reduces the taxable assessed value by half compared to investment property.
Alabama residents 65 and older, or those who are totally and permanently disabled regardless of cause, receive an additional homestead exemption that can eliminate the county and school portions of property taxes. Veterans who receive a VA individual unemployability rating or any total disability determination may qualify.
Federal SCRA protections apply in Alabama. Courts cannot foreclose on an active duty servicemember's primary residence without a court order while on active duty and for 9 months after separation. Servicemembers are also protected from having vehicles or personal property seized for non-payment of personal property taxes without a court order.
Pro Tip: Apply through your county tax assessor's office. For the 100% P&T exemption, bring your VA award letter, DD-214, and proof of AL residency. The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs at va.alabama.gov can assist with documentation. Applications are typically processed within 60 to 90 days.

Alabama has enacted professional license reciprocity laws and unemployment protections to help military spouses maintain careers after a PCS to Redstone Arsenal, Fort Novosel, or Maxwell AFB.
Alabama requires professional licensing boards to act on expedited license applications from military spouses who hold a valid professional license in good standing from another state. Boards must issue a decision within 30 days of a complete application. Covered professions include registered nursing, real estate, teaching, cosmetology, counseling, and many others regulated by the state.
While a full reciprocity license application is being processed, Alabama licensing boards may issue a temporary practice permit allowing the military spouse to work in their profession during the 30-day processing period. This prevents income disruption during the transition.
Military spouses who voluntarily leave employment to accompany their servicemember on a PCS move are eligible for Alabama unemployment insurance benefits. Alabama law recognizes a PCS as a qualifying reason for job separation and does not treat it as a voluntary quit without cause.
The Huntsville and Redstone Arsenal area is one of the largest aerospace and defense employment corridors in the United States. Military spouses with backgrounds in engineering, information technology, intelligence, contracting, logistics, healthcare, or education will find a highly active civilian and defense contractor job market. The Redstone Scientific Information Center and contractor presence on and near post are significant.
Pro Tip: Contact the Alabama Licensing Board for your profession via alabamalicensing.state.al.us. For employment resources near each installation, the Army Community Service (ACS) Employment Readiness office at Redstone Arsenal and Fort Novosel, and the Airman and Family Readiness Center (AFRC) at Maxwell AFB all provide free employment readiness services for military spouses.

The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act applies in full force in Alabama. AL courts, landlords, lenders, and storage facilities must comply with all SCRA provisions.
You can terminate any Alabama residential lease with 30 days written notice after receiving PCS orders or deployment orders for 90 or more consecutive days. Deliver written notice along with a copy of your orders to your landlord. The termination is effective 30 days after the next periodic rental payment date following the date of notice.
Any debt incurred before you entered active duty, including mortgages, car loans, student loans, and credit cards, must be reduced to a maximum 6% annual interest rate upon your written request with a copy of your orders. The lender must forgive all interest above 6% for the active duty period, not just defer it.
Alabama courts cannot foreclose on an active duty servicemember's primary residence without a court order while on active duty and for 9 months after separation. Contact the JAG Legal Assistance office immediately if you receive any foreclosure-related notice while on active duty.
If sued in an Alabama civil court while on active duty and unable to appear, you may request a stay (delay) of proceedings. Alabama courts cannot enter a default judgment against an active duty servicemember without first holding a hearing and appointing military counsel if needed.
Alabama lenders cannot repossess a vehicle purchased before active duty without a court order during active duty if a deposit was made at origination. Alabama storage facilities cannot auction a servicemember's property for non-payment without a court order during active duty.
Pro Tip: SCRA violations are federal offenses. For SCRA disputes in Alabama, contact the JAG Legal Assistance office at Redstone Arsenal, Fort Novosel, or Maxwell AFB. All three installations maintain active Legal Assistance programs with regular walk-in hours.

Alabama offers strong state-level education programs for veterans and Guard members, stacked on top of federal GI Bill benefits, including a notable dependent scholarship program.
Alabama National Guard members in good standing may receive state tuition assistance covering tuition costs at Alabama public colleges and universities. The program supplements federal Tuition Assistance (TA) and is available for Guard members pursuing undergraduate or vocational degrees. Members must maintain satisfactory academic progress and continued Guard membership.
Active duty servicemembers stationed in Alabama and their spouses and dependents qualify for in-state tuition at all Alabama public colleges and universities immediately, with no 12-month residency waiting period required.
All Alabama public colleges and universities participate in federal GI Bill programs. Yellow Ribbon Program participants in Alabama include University of Alabama at Birmingham, Samford University, Huntingdon College, Spring Hill College, Auburn University, and others. These programs can cover tuition costs beyond the public in-state rate for eligible veterans at private institutions.
The Alabama GI Dependents Scholarship Program provides free tuition at Alabama public colleges and universities for dependent children and surviving spouses of veterans who were killed in action, are 100% service-connected permanently and totally disabled, or were prisoners of war. Administered through the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs. This is one of the most generous state dependent scholarship programs in the Southeast.
Maxwell AFB hosts Air University, which provides professional military education and advanced academic programs for active duty Air Force and Space Force personnel. Several Air University schools have partnerships with civilian institutions that allow military students to earn graduate degrees during their Maxwell assignment. Civilian family members near Maxwell can explore courses at nearby Auburn University Montgomery.
Pro Tip: Contact the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs at va.alabama.gov for the GI Dependents Scholarship Program. Each AL public institution has a School Certifying Official (SCO) for GI Bill benefit certifications. The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) has a particularly strong relationship with Redstone Arsenal and offers programs tailored to defense community professionals.

Alabama honors your right to maintain your legal domicile and vote in your home state while stationed at any AL installation.
Being stationed in Alabama does not change your legal domicile. You may continue to vote in your home state via absentee ballot under UOCAVA. File your Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) at FVAP.gov to register and request absentee ballots from your home state.
If you wish to vote in Alabama and claim Alabama as your legal home, you may voluntarily change your domicile. Given Alabama's full exemption of military pay and retirement from income tax, changing domicile to Alabama may have favorable tax implications compared to other states. Register to vote with your county board of registrars.
Military spouses may independently choose their own state of domicile under the Veterans Benefits and Transition Act of 2018. The spouse's domicile does not have to match the servicemember's. Alabama must honor this federal right.
Alabama accepts the FPCA as both a voter registration and absentee ballot request for military voters. Submit your FPCA at least 7 days before the election (earlier is better). Contact your installation VAO for assistance.
Pro Tip: Your installation Voting Assistance Officer (VAO) at Redstone Arsenal, Fort Novosel, or Maxwell AFB can help you file an FPCA at no charge. The Alabama Secretary of State at sos.alabama.gov has military voter resources.
