Fort Jackson is the U.S. Army's largest Basic Combat Training post, on the east side of Columbia. It graduates roughly half of all new Soldiers each year, and it is also home to the Drill Sergeant Academy, the U.S. Army Soldier Support Institute, and the Chaplain Center and School. Permanent-party families get a mid-size capital city, affordable housing, and a short commute. Families flying in for Family Day and graduation need Columbia lodging booked early. This guide covers both.
